The Swarm in Syria

SODOM & GOMORRAH: Revolution is a virus.  Once it infects the mind of one or two people, it can spread across an entire region without regard.  Echoing western policy makers, we may even say that it more adversely affects the poor and vulnerable.


 

The Swarm has begun and is well under way.
 
Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri co-authored two principle works on revolution: Empire and Multitude.  Both are neo-Marxist analyses of the renewed revolution against the status quo.  They make the argument that a loose-knit postmodern imperial system is utilizing trans-national corporations, NGO's, and the nation-state structure to harness the life forces of the broader public.  This broader public (the multitude) in turn powers the empire by granting legitimacy to its institutions.  They call for disparate revolutionary activities to recognize their common purpose and swarm against the system.  To read about the swarm from the authors themselves, click here.
 
 
The Swarm praised by Hardt and Negri has indeed begun.  It has swept across the Middle East and is threatening every part of the world.  Their call to unite disparate revolutionary events and understand their connectedness is being heeded, and we, as opponents of the Swarm, must pay attention to the interconnectedness of these events.

SODOM & GOMORRAH: Politics is theology.  If the neo-Marxists Hardt and Negri have embraced the swarm metaphor and have encouraged revolutionaries to adopt it as their own, the opponents of revolution should look for the parallel theological metaphor to understand the conflict.

The Swarm Makes New Recruits

New South Wales is a mass of farmland hanging precariously between drought and floods, weeds and mice. Land was heavily over-cleared in the first century of settlement, and painstakingly restored toward health over the century that followed. The balance between environmental health and agricultural usefulness has been struggled for, achieved, missed, retained and argued over for every one of those past hundred years, and the process continues.
